CIGNA is continuing efforts to comply with the HIPAA 5010 electronic transaction standards that will be effective January 1, 2012. We have engaged Hewlett Packard (HP) for support with our system enhancements, which will be tested and executed through multiple releases throughout 2011.

Testing

We have begun testing with our directly connected trading partners. Testing is occurring in two phases for the following transactions:

June – July, 2011

  • 837I – Claim submission (institutional)
  • 837P – Claim submission (professional)
  • 837D – Claim submission (dental)
  • 835 – Payment and remittance advice
  • 277 – CA (claim acknowledgment)

August – September, 2011

  • 277RFAI (request for additional information)
  • 277 Pend
  • 276/277 Batch
  • 276/277 Interactive
  • 278 Request/response interactive
  • 270/271 Batch
  • 270/271 Interactive

CIGNA will also contact a select number of trading partners to conduct limited testing.

Release Dates

We have a tentative schedule for release of the 5010-compliant functionalities. CIGNA is targeting the following dates for the completion of system enhancements; the dates are dependent on completion of successful testing and migration to 5010 with each directly connected trading partner.

August/September 2011
  • 837– Claim submission
  • 835 – Payment and remittance advice
  • 834 – Enrollment (excluding GWH-CIGNA networks)
  • 820 – Premium payment
Fourth quarter 2011
  • 270/271 – Eligibility and benefit inquiry
  • 276/277 – Claim status
  • 278 – Authorization
  • 834 – Enrollment for GWH-CIGNA networks

Please work with your trading partners to identify the dates they will be ready to conduct 5010 testing, and to confirm when they will be ready to accept 5010 transactions.

Dual Processing of 4010 and 5010 transactions

CIGNA will not be maintaining dual processing once we transition to 5010, and will no longer accept 4010 transactions once our trading partners have transitioned. Please work with your trading partners to make certain they are able to support 5010 transactions.

Thank you for your continued participation with CIGNA. We will provide additional updates about our 5010 progress throughout the remainder of 2011.
